State of the Internet 2026: 11 Trends That Will Transform Your Online Business

“The future is already here -- it’s just not evenly distributed.”

William Gibson said that decades ago, and it’s never been more true than right now.

Because oh man, is the future already here!

  • AI agents are writing code, booking appointments and managing entire customer service departments.
  • Authenticity has become so valuable that brands are scrambling to prove they’re not using AI.
  • The creator economy -- now worth over $250 billion -- is minting new millionaires every single day.

Unfortunately, most business owners are working harder than ever while seeing diminishing returns.

If that’s you, you’re not alone.

And this year at Live Your Message, we got an up-close look at what’s actually working in this rapidly shifting landscape

Between launching new programs, testing different approaches and working closely with hundreds of business owners, we saw that the business owners who are thriving aren’t necessarily working harder…

They’re working differently.

And after analyzing industry reports, our own results and patterns across countless businesses…

I’ve identified 11 trends that I believe will define online business success in 2026.

Pay close attention, because one (or more) of these may just hold the key to your biggest breakthrough yet!

Trend #1: The Year of the AI Agent

If 2024 was about ChatGPT and 2025 was about AI becoming mainstream… 2026 is the year AI agents become your digital employees.

What’s an AI agent? Think of it as AI that doesn’t just answer questions -- it actually does things. It books your appointments, manages your email sequences, handles customer support and executes entire workflows autonomously.

According to recent research, 69% of business leaders expect AI agents to transform their operations in 2026. Gartner projects that 40% of enterprise apps will include task-specific AI agents by year’s end.

But here’s what’s really exciting for business owners like us…

AI agents are the great equalizer.

For the first time, solopreneurs can operate like they have a team of 10. You can automate your customer onboarding, have AI handle tier-one support questions and even let agents manage parts of your marketing -- all while you focus on the high-value work only YOU can do.

The catch? You need to be intentional about where you deploy agents and where you keep the human touch. Because (as you’ll see in the trends below) human human touch is worth more than ever.

Trend #2: The “Unshittification” Movement

Terrible name, I know… but stay with me here.

2025 saw the internet flooded with AI-generated content, generic blog posts, soulless social media captions and cookie-cutter courses -- because, well… it was all created by the same AI models.

Research shows that AI now accounts for roughly half of new English-language articles published online. Up from just 8% when ChatGPT launched.

The result?

People are DONE with AI-generated fakeness.

In 2026, we’re seeing a massive backlash -- a movement toward authenticity, intention and real human connection.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use AI. (I use it most days!)

It means the way you use it matters enormously.

Use AI for speed and efficiency behind the scenes -- but let your unique voice, perspective and personality shine through in everything your audience sees.

Because in a world of AI-generated everything… YOU become the differentiator.

Trend #3: Trust is the New Currency

The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer revealed something startling: trust in almost every institution -- government, media, business -- continues to decline.

Yet at the same time, consumers are craving trustworthy sources more than ever.

This creates a massive opportunity for business owners who can build genuine trust.

How do you build trust in 2026?

  • Show your work. Share your process, your mistakes and your learnings -- not just your wins.
  • Deliver results first. Before you ask for the sale, help people get a win. Your micro-products and free content should create real transformation.
  • Be consistent over time. Trust isn’t built in a viral moment -- it’s built through showing up, again and again.
  • Stand for something. Gen Z especially (73% of them) believe businesses should help create a better world. What do YOU stand for?

In a low-trust world, the business owners who build high-trust relationships will win -- period.

Trend #4: Community Over Audience

Here’s a stat that blew my mind: 88% of Americans are members of niche online communities.

Not massive Facebook groups. Not generic email lists. Niche communities where they feel seen and understood.

The old model was: build the biggest audience possible, then monetize.

The 2026 model is: build the most engaged community possible, then serve them deeply.

Micro-creators who serve small, specific groups often get MORE engagement and trust than influencers with massive followings. They also typically earn more per follower.

And people are catching on: nearly 60% of course creators are now selling (or planning to sell) community access as a standalone product.

A strong community = better retention, easier sales and way more referrals.

So ask yourself: Are you building an audience… or are you building a home for your people?

Trend #5: The Cohort Renaissance

Remember when everyone said “passive income” was the dream? Create a course once, sell it forever and make money while you sleep?

Well… that model still works. BUT there’s a massive opportunity to go in the opposite direction.

Cohort-based courses and live programs are making a huge comeback.

Why? Because they deliver what self-paced courses often can’t: accountability, community and real-time support.

(They also command premium prices because of the added value!)

Here’s what I’m seeing do well:

  • Hybrid models -- pre-recorded content PLUS live coaching calls and community support
  • Small group intensives -- 10-20 people going through a transformation together
  • Live launches with cohort delivery -- everyone starts together, moves through together and celebrates together
  • Premium 1:1 or small group upsells -- higher-touch options for those who want more support

The beauty of this model? Higher completion rates, better results for students (which means better testimonials for you) and the ability to charge premium prices.

Trend #6: Short-Form Video as the Gateway Drug

A fascinating stat: 57% of people decide to explore a topic more deeply after seeing short-form content about it on social media.

In other words, your 30-second Reel or TikTok isn’t just entertainment -- it’s the top of your funnel.

Gen Z is already using TikTok and Instagram as search engines. They’re looking for answers -- and they’re finding them in short-form video.

The smart play in 2026:

  • Create short-form content that delivers a quick win or insight
  • Direct people to your longer content (YouTube, podcast, blog) for the deeper dive
  • Use that deeper content to lead into your courses, products and programs

Short-form gets attention. Long-form builds trust. Products deliver transformation. It’s a beautiful ecosystem when you get it working.

Trend #7: The Micro-Empire Model

Here’s a hard truth: only about 4% of creators earn over $100K per year.

The interesting part? Creators who DO hit that level almost always have multiple income streams. Not just one course or one offer.

In 2026, the winning model looks like this:

  • Low-ticket micro-products ($7-$99) -- the entry point
  • Mid-tier programs ($297-$997) -- the core transformation
  • High-ticket coaching or consulting ($2,000+) -- the premium experience
  • Community/membership (recurring) -- ongoing support and connection
  • Digital products (templates, tools, resources) -- passive income layer

Instead of forcing your people into one, high-commitment offer (that’s easy to say no to), you’re able to meet them where they’re at and serve them at every stage of their journey.

Not to mention, this model creates financial security and resilience for you -- if one offer has a down month, the others keep revenue flowing.

Trend #8: The Human Premium

As AI handles more routine tasks… human touch becomes MORE valuable, not less.

This is counterintuitive to many people. “Won’t AI replace everything?” they ask.

Not quite. Here’s what I’m seeing:

  • AI handles the basics better than ever -- which means human-only experiences command a premium
  • People will pay MORE for direct access to real humans they trust
  • 1:1 coaching, small group programs and live experiences are gaining value

The businesses that thrive will use AI to handle the scale… while protecting and premium-pricing the human connection.

Think of it like an “AI sandwich” -- AI at the bottom (handling volume) and AI at the top (powering insights)…

With human connection in the middle where it matters most.

Trend #9: Decision Cycles Keep Getting Longer

Last year I talked about “longtail decision making” -- the fact that people are taking longer and longer to make buying decisions.

Well, it’s only gotten more pronounced.

Google’s research shows decision cycles now stretch 46+ days for many purchases. Cold prospects need 20-50 touchpoints before they’re ready to invest. Even warm leads need 5-12 interactions.

What does this mean for you?

  • Don’t give up on people who don’t buy immediately. I’ve had students join after being on my list for 10 years!
  • Create more meaningful touchpoints. Every email, social post and video is a chance to build trust.
  • Show up consistently across platforms. Your audience needs to see you in multiple places to build confidence.
  • Play the long game. The businesses that win are patient, persistent and focused on value over transactions.

Trend #10: Your Best Customers Are Your Current Customers

With acquisition costs rising and trust harder to build… the smartest business owners are doubling down on existing customers.

Here’s the math that changed my perspective years ago: existing customers are 12x more likely to buy from you than new prospects. And acquiring a new customer costs 5-7x more than retaining an existing one.

So why do most business owners spend 90% of their energy on new leads?

In 2026, focus on:

  • Creating pathways for existing customers to go deeper (upsells, next-level programs and ongoing support)
  • Re-engaging past customers with new offers tailored to where they are now
  • Building loyalty through exceptional experiences (not just transactions)
  • Turning customers into advocates who refer new business to you

The best new customers often come from referrals by happy existing customers. But that can only happen if you invest in making current customers incredibly successful.

Trend #11: Experience Design Is Your Competitive Moat

I’ve been preaching “experiences over information” for years now… and in 2026, it’s not just a nice philosophy. It’s a survival strategy.

Here’s why:

AI can generate information-based content faster and cheaper than any human. It can write course modules, create workbooks and produce video scripts in seconds.

What AI CAN’T do? Design experiences that create genuine transformation.

It can’t craft the journey that keeps students engaged from start to finish. It can’t create the celebration moments that make people feel seen. It can’t build the gamification, accountability structures and community connections that drive completion rates.

That’s your competitive moat.

While everyone else races to create more and more AI-generated content… you can win by creating better experiences that actually deliver results.

Because here’s the truth: your students don’t just want information. They want transformation.

That’s what Experience Design delivers. And it’s more valuable than ever.

Thank you Marisa, I appreciate your insights and thoughts. I agree 100%. For my store, your insights are where I am at and what I aim to provide for my customers. I have grown weary and very cautious of purchasing courses that offer such and such. For many of the topics, I see multiple and multiple courses for the same thing. The course only covers a shallow surface, not the needed in depth training for better AI use. I think the longer time to purchase is a reflection of the get rich quick schemes that so many courses offer and they only provide surface. You have to buy an upsell to learn one more piece and still it isn’t enough to do what you need to do. People want the real deal.

I hear you. A lot of people are feeling the same way right now.

There’s definitely been a wave of surface-level courses and “quick win” promises, and people are becoming much more thoughtful about what they invest in. What most people actually want now is depth, real strategy, and something they can truly apply.

That shift is a good thing. It’s pushing creators and businesses to focus on delivering real value, not just quick hype.
