Motivation. We need it like the air we breathe.
It fuels our actions and directs our choices.
It inspires the best ideas and ignites a powerful desire to demand more of ourselves.
To reach higher.
To dream bigger.
When it feels like the road to the top is nothing but a minefield of painful obstacles and impossible challenges, it’s our motivation – our inner resolve – that keeps us going.
Motivated, we can make massive progress toward any goal, no matter how unrealistic or audacious. Even the dreams other people called “crazy” seem to be within our grasp.
That’s because motivation can recreate our reality. It redefines what we believe we’re capable of. It’s the voice that says we can do anything.
And we can.
Until it’s gone.
The thing about motivation is that it’s unpredictable.
Like a wild creature that can’t be caged, motivation can be fleeting, here one day, gone the next.
And when your motivation leaves you, it leaves you feeling torn in two. A shell. Like the love of your life just walked out the door — desolate; and ready to call it quits.
You might ask yourself, “Why bother?”
I’ve seen this happen to so many entrepreneurs.
These are some of smartest, most inspired people I know but then, out of nowhere, they lose interest in their business.
They start to feel bored. They can’t seem to connect with the why behind what they do.
And the most heartbreaking thing of all…
They stop trying and — sometimes — they never start again.
Meet the Miner and the Junkman
In his legendary self-help classic Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill writes about the miner in Colorado, who quit just before he hit the mother lode.
He sold his machinery to a junkman and went home, disappointed and empty handed.
But the story doesn’t end there.
Instead of selling the machinery for parts, the junkman held on to it. He hired an expert to check if there was any gold in the area.
And that’s when they learned the truth…
The miner had quit when he was just 3 feet from gold.
Now, most people share this as a cautionary tale around the importance of NOT quitting.
They focus on the miner and how he quit way too soon.
But I want to talk about the junkman. Think about him for a second…
He’s not a miner. Yet he chose to hire a mining expert.
He chose to find out for himself if there was gold in the area.
He was driven – motivated – to create a better life for himself.
He was motivated to be more than what he was.
And he was rewarded for it.
As the story goes, the junkman went on to make millions and millions of dollars.
This was back in the mid-1800s… and it was a fortune beyond his wildest imagination.
If you want to achieve success and make your dreams a reality, it’s NOT just about not giving up. It’s more about not quitting when you’re 3 feet away from the gold.
I want you to think about this: How do you not quit?
How do you keep going even when it’s the last thing you feel like doing?
The answer: by finding a deep well of motivation within yourself.
As entrepreneurs we need to rely on our own resolve; what psychologists call intrinsic motivation – to create what we want.
When motivated from within, nothing and no one has the power to stop you and has the side-effect of making you… unstoppable.
In his book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, bestselling author Daniel Pink says intrinsic motivation is about doing something because it matters to us. We are engaged and interested in getting to the outcome because we believe it’s meaningful and important.
So, the question becomes — exactly how do you tap into intrinsic motivation, whenever you need it?
There are two ways. The first — struggling alone by yourself, unprepared and without the right tools can take years to bear fruit, if you’re lucky. The second involves gathering the right tools to help you on your journey. Tools from those who have successfully walked the path before you, who have a different perspective, and who can open your mindset and help you take real action that will move mountains in your life.
And this brings me to a VERY exciting announcement…
